  Biography  

Dr. Barry Posner

Barry Posner is a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He earned his medical degree from the University of Manitoba, graduating as the Gold Medalist in 1961. After initiating residency training at the Winnipeg General Hospital, he pursued postgraduate work in biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and completed his clinical training at the New England Medical Center. He was subsequently a research associate in biochemistry at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and thereafter joined the McGill Faculty of Medicine and the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1970. He was a Medical Research Council Scholar and then Chercheur Boursier du Quebec from 1971-1986. By 1979, he was Senior Physician, Professor of Medicine, and Director of the Polypeptide Laboratory for hormone research. In 1981, he was appointed Director of the McGill Training Program in Endocrinology and Metabolism, and has served as Vice-President for Research at the Royal Victoria hospital, and Chairman of the Research Committee of the hospital's Research Institute (1987-1990). He holds Fellowships in the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and the American College of Physicians, and was elected to the Association of American Physicians in 1988. In 1990, he received the Distinguished Scientist award of the Canadian Society of Clinical Investigation, and in 1991, was elected to Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada. In 1996, he was appointed Physician-in-Chief at the Sir Mortimer B.Davis Jewish General Hospital. In 1999, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada.

Dr Posner has published over 260 scientific manuscripts, and has delivered numerous talks outside Montreal as a visiting professor and seminar speaker, including the Banting and Best Memorial Lecture of the International Diabetes Federation (1991), the Pfizer Visiting Professor at Harvard University (1993), the Joe Doupe Memorial Lecture at the University of Manitoba (1994), the Novartis lecture of the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (1997), and the David M. Kovitz Memorial Lecture at the University of Calgary (2000). He holds grants from the Medical Research Council of Canada and the National Cancer Institute and has been a recipient of industrial research support for over 8 years. He has continued to pursue his research on the mechanism of insulin and growth factor action, the cellular dynamics of hormone receptors, and the development of novel agents as oral insulins for the treatment of diabetes. This latter work has led to 10 patents. Since 1975, he has trained 31 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
