  Biography

Dr. Ivan G. Fantus

Dr. George Fantus received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and his MD at McGill University in Montreal. This was followed by clinical training in Internal Medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill. In 1978, he began subspecialty training in endocrinology, comprising research training in the Diabetes Branch of the National Institutes of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and a clinical fellowship at the University of Toronto. Following training, Dr. Fantus joined the faculty at McGill in the department of medicine as assistant professor and established his independant research lab in the Polypeptide Hormone Laboratory and clinical practice in the division of endocrinology and metabolism. In 1987, he was appointed director of the Metabolic Day Centre at the Royal Victoria Hospital. In 1991, Dr. Fantus moved to the University of Toronto and is currently professor of medicine and physiology and director, division of endocrinology and metabolism in the department of medicine. He is also senior scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute, director of the Core Laboratory of the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre, and associate scientist at the Samuel Lunenfeld Reseach Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital. His clinical work in endocrinology is located at the Mount Sinai Hospital/University Health Network, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
His research interests include the mechansim of insuline signal transduction with a specific focus on insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. He was contributed to the elucidation of the physiological role of insuline receptor tyrosine kinase signaling. More recently, his research has also focused on “glucose toxicity”, not only in insuline target tissues, but also as it relates to the pathogenesis of chronic complications of diabetes, especially diabetic nephropathy. He was discovered some of the ways by which abnormal glucose metabolism in the setting of hyperglycemia can alter gene expression. In 1993, he received the Young Scientist Award of the Canadian Diabetes Association and has published over 50 original articles. His research has been supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Juvenil Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRFI), and the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). He currently serves as scientific officer of the Metabolism and Nutrition grants committee at CIHR and is a member of the CDA grants panel.
