Dr. Meredith Hawkins

Dr Hawkins earned her medical degree from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she is currently the Co-Director of the Medical Scientist Program.
Dr Hawkins serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology, as well as the Board of Directors of the American Federation of Medical Research, where she is also Co-chair of the Public Policy Committee. Recent publications include : Discordant Effects of Glucosamine (GlcN) on Insulin-Stimulated Glucose Metabolism and Phosphatidylinositol-3-Kinase; The Effect of Glycemic Control on Hepatic and Peripheral Glucose Effectiveness in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; Fructose Restores the Ability of Hyperglycemia Per Se to Regulate Hepatic Glucose Production (GP) in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2); and Increased Free Fatty Acid Availability Contributes to the Lack of Glucose Effectiveness in Type 2 Diabetes
Mellitus (DM2). Recent invited lectures include : Regulation of Hepatic Glucose Production at the Hagedorn Research Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark; and Mediators of Hepatic Glucose Metabolism at the 50th Annual Advanced Postgraduate Course of the American Diabetes Association. Dr Hawkins has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and the Diabetes Action Foundation International. She has also received a Junior Physician Scientist Award from the American Federation of Medical Research, a Teaching Excellence Award from the Toronto Hospital Department of Medicine, and a Medical research Council of Canada Fellowship. She is very proud of her Canadian roots and the excellent training she received at the University of Toronto.
