Dr. Phillip Marsden

Philip A Marsden, MD
Professor of Medicine, Keenan Chair in Medical research
University of Toronto
Staff
St. Michael's Hospital
Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Dr Marsden obtained his training as a Clinician-Scientist in Nephrology at the Brigham and Women's hospital, Harvard Medical School, under the supervision of Dr BJ Ballermann and Dr BM Brenner. He established an independant laboratory in 1991 at the University of Toronto and St Michael's Hospital which has helped firmly establish the principle that endothelial cells in culture are a wonderful model with which to dissect the mechanisms by which vascular tonus is perturbed in diseases of the blood vessel. He is recognized as one of the leading international experts in the field of cellular and molecular regulation of endothelial-derived vasomediator expression, and was recently elected to the prestigious American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI).
Dr Marsden was also awarded the 2001 Kidney Foundation of Canada's Medal for Research excellence. He has contributed over 50 peer-reviewed articles to journals such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, USA and the Journal of Immunology. Other national and international collaborations have resulted in publications which have had a significant impact in the fields of immune coagulation, regulation of genes of the immune system, transplant rejection and cardiac myocyte function. Dr Marsden recently joined the Editorial Board of the New England Journal of Medicine and presently holds the Keenan Chair in Medical Research.
