  Biography

Dr. Robin Buckingham

Dr Robin E Buckingham PhD

Robin joined Beecham Pharmaceuticals (UK) in February 1977, after several years in cardiovascular research at British Drug Houses (1969-1972) and Roche Products (1972-1977). In his early years at Beecham, he was involved in the discovery and development of cromakalim, a selective opener of smooth muscle ATP-dependent potassium channels. Since 1991, in SmithKline Beecham and latterly with GlaxoSmithKline, he has been part of the team which developed rosiglitazone (Avandia), a thiazolidinedione drug now marketed globally for treating Type 2 diabetes.

As part of the Avandia development process, Robin gained extensive experience in diabetes research, patent registration, regulatory affairs, marketing and, most recently, clinical development and medical affairs. He has travelled widely in support of Avandia, has had a number of academic science collaborations in Europe and North America, and has also given many academic lectures on diabetes and insulin resistance. He is also an active member of the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

In early June, Robin left GlaxoSmithKline as part of a restructuring of the Department of Clinical Development & Medical Affairs (Europe). However, he continues to pursue a lively interest in contemporary issues in metabolic research and medicine, including the pathophysiology of Type 2 diabetes and its associated cardiovascular disease, and the application of thiazolidinedione drugs. He is presently establishing academic links at Oxford University and King’s College London (UK) and has also set up his own consultancy business.
