Steven E. Khan, MB, ChB, is professor of medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University of Washington and associate chief of staff for research and development at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle. Additionally, he is the associate director of the Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center, University of Washington. Dr. Kahn received his medical school training at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He did fellowships in endocrinology and metabolism with the Diabetes and Endocrine Research Group in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town and the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University of Washington. Dr. Kahn’s research interests include beta-cell function in normal subjects and the pathogenesis of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes. He has also done extensive work on regulation of amylin secretion as well as the role of islet amyloid in the pathogenesis of the islet lesion of type 2 diabetes. Among his numerous awards are the Herman Ostrum Memorial Award, the Dana Foundation Feasibility Award, the Novartis Award in Diabetes, the American Diabetes Association Distinguished Clinical Scientists Award, and the R.H. Williams-Rachmiel Levine Award. Dr. Kahn has served as president of the Western Section of the American Federation of Medical Research (AFMR) and president of the Western Society for Clinical Investigation, has been a member of the National Council of the AFMR, and is currently a member of the board of directors of the American Diabetes Association. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and currently serves as associate editor of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and on the editorial board of Diabetes. He has published more than 140 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and over 40 reviews and book chapters related to his research.
